A different expression of Viognier

Condrieu la Carthery

The team at Château Grillet is very proud to introduce a new wine produced from vines on the estate since 2017: the Condrieu “La Carthery”.
We were indeed fortunate in our acquisition of a few acres of vines adjacent to the historical boundaries of Château-Grillet that come under the Condrieu appellation. We made two consecutive purchases, one in 2013 and one in 2017. This gave us two plots with 12 dry-stone terraces, known as “chaillées” in the region, that perfectly fit in with patchwork of plots that make up the estate.

From the first harvests, we could see that the wine from these plots was of high quality so the decision was made to add the Condrieu to the family of wines produced on the estate. This wine sits between the Côtes-du-Rhône and Château-Grillet.
Thanks to this purchase, today we are able to offer a complete range Viognier wines from the Rhône Valley that express the different facets of this grape variety from vines planted in the amphitheatre around the heartland of the estate.

The two plots of Condrieu cover less than 0.25 hectare and their high-quality terroir is home to vines that are around 20 years old. The largest plot (17 acres) is situated in “La Carthery”, hence the name of this wine.
The soil is naturally quite similar to that of Château-Grillet’s plots and vinification methods follow the same philosophy. However, the maturation process is much shorter than Château Grillet, giving a wine which unveils a different expression of Viognier’s aromatic complexity and can be enjoyed in its youth. It is a rare wine which is produced in small quantities.
